Installation of grid surfaces for parking areas and urban areas

3 cm thick grids - straight from the manufacturer

Grid surfaces became a popular solution for the building industry and urban areas thanks to their versatility and aesthetic appearance. They can be used in various locations, from parking areas to garden pathways. Installation of grid surface is simple but requires a professional approach and taking appropriate steps. In this article, we will discuss how to install the grid surface step-by-step.

STEP 1: Preparation of installation location

Correct preparation of the area is the first step in the installation of the grid surface. Here's what you do:
  1. Determine the grid installation location. Precisely define where you want to install the grid surface on parking or urban areas. Make sure that this location is suitable and meets your requirements.
  2. Remove the surface layer of soil: Remove all obstacles such as grass, roots, rocks and other unnecessary materials from the surface where you want to install the grids.
  3. Prepare sub-base: Prepare sub-base for the grid. The permeable mix of crushed stone and gravel is used as a standard filling. The soil should be properly compacted and levelled. It is recommended to use a 20-30 mm deep base for passenger vehicles and a 30-50 cm deep base for trucks and other heavy equipment.

STEP 2: Laying the grid

You may proceed to grid laying when the installation location is properly prepared. Here’s how you do this:
  1. Start from the corner: Always start with the corner of the previously prepared surface. Leave the suitable expansion joint (usually 2-5 cm) depending on the size of the area to be covered.

  2. Install the grids with extreme catches: Install the grids with extreme catches towards the laying direction, then press them e.g. using the rubber hammer. Grids can be formed and cut using such tools as a saw, angle grinder etc.

STEP 3: Filling the grid

Now it’s time to fill the grids. Here’s how you do this:
  1. Aggregate or decorative stone: Fill the grids with aggregate or decorative stones. You may choose 4/8 mm or 8/16 size and 1-2 cm initial backfill above the grid surface.

  2. Earth with a mix for grass: If you want the grass growing through the grids you should fill it with a mix allowing growth of grass, preferably with the seeds. Make sure that the filling is well compacted. Putting the surface into operation after first mowing and rooting of the grass.
Installation of the grid surfaces will be relatively simple if you follow these steps. However, you should remember that precision and accuracy are crucial.
